The trip to the Midlands did not go to plan for the 3rds. No excuses should be offered, like defenders falling over their white sticks or even midfielders falling asleep in unusual places or even forwards celebrating significant birthdays, but a lack of subs definitely didn’t help. Even the use of 4 different senior players as a rotating umpire did not affect the outcome, this was a fair result – the one bright spot on the day was Alan O'Donnell in goals who kept the team in the game for the first 55 minutes conceding just one goal from a myriad of Mullingar chances. But in the last 15 minutes the dam broke and 4 goals scored in quick succession.
But at the end of the day, everyone blamed the manager, who didn’t travel – other engagements shouldn’t take priority over going on a mini-holiday to the shires (but promotion thoughts were giving some on the team nosebleeds, so maybe it was the wisest action – in the long term interests of the club – so now -on with the cup)
