The Wickla Way

The 4s headed down the coast to play Wickla on a beautiful autumn day. The Wickla Way is probably one of the best known and oldest walks. Do you hear they have started walking hockey the 4s back four are already there. Anyway Alan Rath was going to don the pads when we heard Justin van der Spuy played keeper at a fairly high level in South Africa so he duly obliged. El Presidente was dragged off his throne in front of the tv for the all black match to umpire. Conor Miles was welcomed back to the fold. The Reds opted to play up the hill with the sun (in November Cop on) and in the first minute had a great chance to score. But after that it was mostly one way traffic as a young Wicklow side pressed and had the red defence under pressure but no one got around Justin's House. 0-0 at half time. In the third quarter the deadlock was broken with Wicklow scoring a soft goal. But after that CHC rallied with a few chances created. But in general the passing was not good especially from the skipper at the back. Fourth quarter the fourths gave it a great rattle and created a great chance close to the end. Ed Bourke had a bullet of a shot taken off the line by a defender with the keeper beaten. So a defeat in the end but the team couldn't be faulted for effort. On the way out after the match a lady said to me that most of the Wicklow team were going to school. I said most of our team are nearly going for their pension. Thank goodness Ireland brightened up the rest of our day. Many thanks to Stapo for umpiring. Town at home in 2 weeks time
